The Different types of Sugar

http://www.ncnynl.com/doc-view-4958.html

As usual, I was eating supper with my family today. "I wonder what are the differences between brown sugar, white sugar and crystal sugar?" My cousin asked suddenly. She is eleven and is in grade six this year. "Their colors are different obviously." Her dad said at once, "and they have variety of usages." "Well, do they have the same structures and how do people make them?" She asked again. It's not a hard question, but no one can answer her correctly and properly. After supper, I decided to search for the answer use the knowledge and techniques I've learned from ALES204 class.

At the beginning, I sent text messages to my friends, but they replied me almost the same answer: sorry I don't really know it. Okay, maybe people do not want to write a lot through text messages. Then I tried to post the question "what are the differences between brown sugar, white sugar and crystal sugar?" to my Facebook to see if someone know the answer will write a comment on it. However, nobody said anything. I looked up on my friend's blog to see if there is any useful information because she is quite interested in this field. Disappointedly, I only saw 'black rice' on her blog. Then I gave up on asking people directly, instead, I searched on the Internet and finally found a perfect website named 'Sugar'. I didn't have time to read the entire page yet, but I will definitely.

It is a daily life question, isn't it? We thought we knew the answer, but in fact we don't. Just because the question isn't as important as the ones on the exams, so people are too lazy to look for the right answer. At least I realized this problem now and I'm trying to solve it. That's what I've learned until this moment.

I used these methods throughout this 'experiment': talk to people directly, text message, phone call, Facebook, Internet, and even tried to post the question onto Yahoo Answers. These are all ways of communication. What's more, in the ALES204 class I learned how to cite, how to edit Wikipedia, what is open peer review, etc. I love this class! Here are the five links I commented on my fellow classmates:
1. Yiting Jin
2. Ziyu Shi
3. Manjiang Yu
4. Stephanie
5. Yiwenlulu

Tomorrow is the last day of class and Christmas is coming soon! Enjoy reading it~

Writing A Scientific Article

I have a chance to write a scientific article by choosing my favourite topic this semester during ALES class. To be honest, it takes me quite a while to decide which option I'm gonna to write about because they all seem pretty hard. Some of the topics need us to compare journals from nowadays with the one from fifteen years ago, which means I have to search at the library. At last I choose the option one 'open access' because it provides me questions I have to answer. Although I have plenty of time to do it, it is still difficult to write an article about something I've never heard about before, especially a  'scientific article'.

First of all, I look up the summary and questions so that I can roughly know what 'open access' means and the aspects I'm planning to write. I divide the entire article to five parts: introduction, background, discussion, impacts, and conclusion. I search on the website like Wikipedia to gather information and ask my family members of their point of views. Plus, I find that Peter Suber's rearches on 'open access' are really helpful to me. That's much better than I think about everything by myself. In the end, I name my scientific article as 'Diversity of Open Access'. The moment I finish writing the article I am so proud of myself. However, I need more practise and have to start a bit earlier than this time.

When I'm browsing my fellow classmates' blogs, I find out some people have really interesting design and contents. For example, Yolanda's blog has an intersting name: Find Mood. But what I like the best is the videos and funny pictures she put in. I will keep my style and improve my blog at the same time : ]

I finally became a Wikipedian!

Of course I will put up some screen shots of my gorgeous work of Wikipedia! Here they come!

Isn't it beautiful? If you want to see the full version, click HERE  :)
I never knew that one day I can become a Wikipedian because I deeply thought that those editors are people who got really good academic knowledge. After doing this assignment, I feel like hmm... I am not bad at all and I am an actual writer now!  Therefore, I am going to share a little bit about this wonderful experience with you  :P

First, I chose the 'China famous tea' stub because this is a topic that I am both familiar with and interested in so that I have more information to write and share. The stub had so less stuffs in, only contained a picture and a table (PS, the table is neat). I decided to add more words to the introduction paragraph and add two sections in it which is 'Features' and 'Descriptions'. At last I only wrote two descriptions about 'Xi hu Longjing Tea' and 'Dongting Bi Luochun Tea' due to the words number and the limitation of time of this assignment. But I can't deny that it is hard to search for 'professional resources' of these tea information (eg. history). I decided that if I have time later, I will finish the descriptions of 'The Ten Great Chinese Teas'.

Today when I opened the Wikipedia site, I found that it looked different from last night after I edited it. I looked up the edit history and found some else edited it after my job. I don't know if she chose the same stub with me or just a random person doing her work. Whatsoever, I hope I am doing well! I also looked up my friend Sophie's blog. She wrote something about the University in her hometown and I really liked it. I think that's about it. Hope you enjoy reading it~

It's All About Facebook!

Minghua Yu's Facebook page
The first day I went to Harry Ainlay Hish School, a person asked me if I had a Facebook account. I will never forget how surprise she was when I said "NO" to her. So I created mine after school, but honestly, except chatting with friends, what else did I do with it? Who knows that I can even find jobs by creating a professional  business page!

It took me a while to figure out what it really means by "business profile". You provide all your information like what jobs you are looking for and post your professional resume and cover letter as looking for a job in real life, but in a more convenient way. It can save paper and time.

People do not have too much time to sit together, chat and know more about each other because everyone has their own business. So in my opinion, the best way to solve this problem is to view their blogs and Facebook to know what they are thinking and interested in. I looked at my friend Stephanie's blog and find out she is a really hard-working person. She almost wrote everything she could and even added some dietitian's websites because she is learning food and nutrition. With the social communication media blog, I can learn what she did better than me.

When creating the business profile, I do not have a professional picture so that I used a photo related to Food -- and that is what I am learning and interested in right now. As time goes by, I will add more contents in to improve it. And if other people are confused with how to create a Facebook page, here is a link to see: http://www.squidoo.com/facebookpage

A New Start

Hello! My name is Minghua Yu and I’m preferred to be called as Candi. Before, I looked up a lot of other people’s blogs, but never think about creating my own one! I think this is a new start and I am definitely looking forward to learning more skills!

I’m a second year student with a Bachelor of Science in Food and nutrition major. During the past, I thought as a student, I only need to attend all the lectures, read textbooks, work hard throughout terms and get high grades so that I would be success. However, after taking ALES 204, I realized how wrong I was and how important the role of communication is in all fields of study, not only in food and nutrition! I started to use Twitter and now blogs, feels like the whole world is getting smaller and going faster than before. As an International Student, I am weak at language skills comparing to local students. I was nervous and shy, afraid that other people will tease me if I said something wrong, so that’s why I don’t like to do presentations.

Because I’m only a second year student so that I’m not quite sure about my future careers yet, but whatever I will do is connected with communications. Assume that I will be a food scientist so that I will investigate the chemical, physical and sensory nature of food, processing, preserving, packaging etc, it is important to keep in touch with other people doing the same job as me, or even economists and managers. I sometimes discuss the future possible careers with my friend Manjiang and I found that was really meaningful. It is useless if I have new ideas but don’t communicate with others.

It is only a beginning like the picture a new day I posted below. Really hope that I will have improvements in the field of communication. Keep fighting and never give up! Thanks for listening.
